Vancouver Christian School serves Christian families by providing an excellent Christ-centered education in a secure learning environment so that each student will be equipped to become a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ.
The Vancouver Christian School (VCS) society was established in the 1930's and the school opened its doors in 1949. We are one of the oldest Christian schools in British Columbia.
VCS is an independent interdenominational society; we represent over 110 churches.
VCS endeavors to teach children that faith and learning go together. We help children develop a distinctive Christian worldview. See Mission and Value Statements
All parents are viewed as active partners with the school and are expected to participate in volunteering and supporting their children's education. The school is parent run and parent can become members of the society.
TUITION / FUNDING
As an independent school, we receive 50% of the operational funding that public schools receive. The remaining 50% is covered by tuition. Fundraising pays for capital expenditures and VCS hosts one major capital campaign each fall. The school is committed to keeping tuition affordable for families who desire Christian education.
All teachers are professing and active Christians and are required to hold a valid BC Teaching certificate. Teachers are required to take a course every two years and are continuously involved in professional growth such as on going evaluations and professional learning groups.
VCS follows the learning outcomes provided by the BC Ministry of Education but goes beyond them by providing a Christian perspective for each unit taught. More details on Curriculum
The BC Ministry of Education performs a thorough evaluation every six years and a monitoring visit every 2 years. The Society of Christian Schools of B.C. also performs evaluations of the administration, board and school programs. Students participate in standardized testing in Grades 4 and 7 and consistently perform at a higher rate than provincial norms.
VCS is divided into 3 sections: K-5 Elementary, 6-8 Middle School, and 8-12 High School (Carver Christian High School
.) The high school has a different location and students can ride a shuttle between campuses. We are committed to the Middle School concept as the best research shows that this grouping is most effective for students between the ages of 11-13.
Our High School
For over 60 years, Vancouver Christian School and John Knox Christian School has faithfully offered excellent Christian education to students and families in the Greater Vancouver Area: Vancouver Christian offering K-10 and John Knox offering K-7. In 1999, the feeling began to grow that together to they could partner to offer parents Christian Education from Kindergarten through to Grade 12. It was not a new feeling, but a recovery of a vision that had existed in the schools for years. The desire to open up a Christian high school nearby revived naturally and developed quickly. What if students could attend a Christian high school locally instead of Surrey or Richmond? What if the strong faith communities that surrounded these two grade schools could extend to include Grades 9 through 12?
Parents, staff, administrators all became excited at the possibility. The feeling was nurtured and formulated into a bold vision, and in 2000, a team of parents and administrators came together and established a task force made up of parents and administrators from JKCS, VCS, and Fraser Valley Christian High School. They set out for themselves a timeline, with the proposed opening date of September 6, 2005. For two years they planned and prepared and prayed for this new high school. At last the communities of JKCS and VCS were able to launch Carver Christian High School. In February 2005, JKCS and VCS formally signed a participation agreement for the operation of Carver. On September 6, 2005, Carver Christian High School opened its doors.
Our high school is a diverse community that embraces students from various denominations and cultural backgrounds. The teachers are committed to teaching from a Christian perspective, out of a Biblical worldview, and to striving to truly integrate faith and learning in each class. In all its facets, Carver Christian High School, is committed to glorifying God through excellence.
